Biography Joan Schneider

Joan Schneider, South African-born pianist, studied piano wth Adolph Hallis and harmony, counterpoint and orchestration with Richard Cherry. After receiving a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, she continued her solo piano studies in Munich, obtaining the State Diploma from the Hochschule für Musik. In addition to her solo training, she distinguished herself as an accompanist in the Lied interpretation courses given by Erik Werba as well as in the vocal class of Ernst Haefliger.

Her repertoire includes works covering a period from the Baroque age to the 21st century, with special emphasis on composers like Arnold Schönberg and John Cage. She co-founded the Munich Art Ensemble for New Music and has performed as a soloist, accompanist and chamber music partner in various music festivals in Germany such as the Breminale, Munich Stockhausentage, Ludwigsburger Schlossfestspiele and Dresdner Tage der Zeitgenössischen Musik.

In addition, she has performed in diverse series in Munich: Ensemble und Stimme of the Munich Philharmonic, Worte und Musik, Musik zwischen den Stühlen and Verhört?

Together with the actress Christa Weber she took part in many cabaret evenings featuring music by Christof Herzog. Since the eighties she has performed as a duo with Christopher Barritt, for many years solo cellist of the Munich Symphony Orchestra and also with Roger Jannotta.
